We collect information you provide directly to us when you create an account, use our services, or contact us. This includes:

• Account Information: Your name, email address, and password (stored as a secure hash — we never see your plaintext password).
• Study Data: Your chat conversations, quiz results, flashcard progress, and generated study notes. This data is stored to provide you with a personalized experience and to allow you to access your history.
• Usage Data: We may collect anonymous usage analytics such as which tools you use most, session duration, and feature interaction patterns to improve the product.

We do not collect payment information, as StudyMate is completely free.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Provide, maintain, and improve StudyMate's features and services
• Store your conversations, quiz scores, and study materials so you can access them across sessions
• Respond to your inquiries and provide customer support
• Monitor for bugs, security issues, and abuse
• Improve our AI prompts and study tool algorithms

3. AI Processing

When you use StudyMate, your messages are sent to Mistral AI's API to generate responses. Mistral may process your messages according to their own privacy policy. We do not use your conversations to train our own AI models. Your prompts are sent solely to generate your requested output and are not stored by us in any form other than your conversation history in your account.

4. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored in MongoDB Atlas with encryption at rest. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt with 12 rounds of salting. All API communication is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS. While no system is 100% secure, we implement industry-standard security practices to protect your information.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. We may share limited data with service providers who help us operate the platform (such as MongoDB for database hosting and Mistral for AI processing), but only to the extent necessary to provide the service.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access: View all data we have about you through your account dashboard
• Delete: Delete your account and all associated data at any time
• Manage: Delete individual conversations from the sidebar
• Contact: Reach out to us at any time via our contact page

7. Cookies

StudyMate uses minimal cookies — specifically, your authentication token is stored in your browser's localStorage (not as a traditional cookie) for session management. We do not use tracking cookies or third-party analytics cookies.

8. Children's Privacy

StudyMate is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected such information, we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
